Banyuwangi, a regency in East Java, Indonesia, has garnered national attention for its innovative approach to modernizing agriculture. Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs, Zulkifli Hasan, recently lauded Banyuwangi's efforts and urged Bupati Ipuk Fiestiandani to share the region's agricultural advancements with millennials across the country.
The cornerstone of Banyuwangi's success is the "Jagoan Tani" program, an initiative designed to mentor young entrepreneurs in the agricultural sector. Launched in 2021, this program has successfully cultivated hundreds of millennial farmers engaged in various stages of agriculture, from cultivation to marketing processed agricultural products. The program's comprehensive approach ensures that participants gain hands-on experience in farming while also acquiring skills in digital marketing and product innovation.
Minister Zulkifli Hasan emphasized the importance of synergy between traditional senior farmers and tech-savvy younger generations. He noted that while senior farmers possess invaluable experience, young farmers bring expertise in mechanization and digital marketing. This collaboration is pivotal for advancing Indonesia's agricultural sector. He stated, "In the past, we used buffaloes for plowing, but now we use machines. Millennial farmers are even utilizing drones. This innovation has been developed in Banyuwangi and should be shared with other regions."
Banyuwangi's commitment to agricultural innovation is further exemplified by the establishment of the Millennial Farmers Cooperative. Comprising primarily alumni of the Jagoan Tani program, this cooperative supports the marketing of agricultural products, both online and offline. With 170 members, most under the age of 40, the cooperative markets a diverse range of products, including fresh produce like milk, mushrooms, chilies, and dragon fruit, as well as processed items such as dragon fruit chips and banana chips.
Bupati Ipuk Fiestiandani expressed gratitude for the central government's support and highlighted the critical role of young people in ensuring future food security. She remarked, "Involving young people in agriculture is essential, as they are the backbone of future food security. The agricultural sector also serves as a primary driver of the regional economy."
The success of the Jagoan Tani program underscores the potential of youth involvement in agriculture. By integrating modern technology and innovative marketing strategies, Banyuwangi has set a benchmark for other regions aiming to rejuvenate their agricultural sectors. The collaborative efforts between senior and junior farmers, supported by government initiatives, are paving the way for a sustainable and prosperous agricultural future in Indonesia.
