PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk (PGEO) has commenced a geothermal exploration project at Gunung Tiga, Ulubelu, Tanggamus, Lampung. The initiative aims to validate a geothermal reserve potential of 55 MW. This project is a strategic step to enhance renewable energy capacity and aligns with Indonesia’s energy transition goals toward net zero emissions by 2060.
According to Edwil Suzandi, Director of Exploration and Development at PGEO, the project symbolizes the company’s commitment to developing geothermal energy. "We are optimistic that this exploration will confirm reserves of approximately 55 MW, which not only adds renewable energy capacity but also empowers local communities and boosts economic activities in Lampung and Sumatra," Edwil said in a statement.
Gunung Tiga was chosen due to its promising geothermal characteristics. Sapto Trianggo, Project Manager for the Ulubelu Extension 1 Project, stated that the exploration involves three wells, developed in stages, adhering to strict safety and environmental standards. "Environmental impact studies have been completed, and all activities will be closely monitored to minimize ecological impacts," Sapto added.
The project emphasizes collaboration with local stakeholders, ensuring sustainable economic, social, and environmental benefits. The surrounding communities, particularly in Desa Gunung Tiga, have expressed support for the project, which is expected to create jobs and foster economic growth.
This effort marks one of PGEO’s significant contributions to Indonesia’s energy independence targets. By expanding geothermal resources, the project supports the nation’s renewable energy ambitions while creating long-term benefits for future generations.
