PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia Tbk (BRI) has addressed reports suggesting it was targeted by a ransomware attack, assuring customers that their data and funds remain secure. This assurance follows a post on Instagram by MrBert, referencing Falcon Feeds.io, which claimed that BRI was a victim of the Bashe Ransomware.
In a statement released on December 18, 2024, BRI confirmed that all banking services, including BRImo, QLola, and ATM/CRM systems, are operating normally. Arga M. Nugraha, BRI’s Director of Digital and IT, emphasized that the bank’s IT security systems adhere to international standards and undergo regular updates to counter digital threats. “Proactive measures are in place to ensure customer information remains protected,” Arga stated in an official post on BRI’s X account.
The state-owned bank reiterated its commitment to prioritizing customer safety and maintaining operational stability. “We assure you that BRI systems and transactions are functioning normally,” the statement read.
Ransomware attacks, like the alleged Bashe Ransomware incident, are a growing concern globally. This type of malware takes control of systems and restricts access until a ransom is paid. Earlier this year, a significant ransomware attack, Brain Cipher Ransomware, disrupted the National Data Center (PDN), halting operations for several days.
BRI’s proactive response highlights the importance of robust cybersecurity measures in today’s banking industry. By maintaining internationally certified IT systems and continuously updating them, the bank aims to stay ahead of potential threats and build trust with its customers.
