Apple is reportedly working on a foldable iPad, with plans to launch the device as early as 2028. According to the latest updates, the tablet is designed to unfold into a size equivalent to two large-screen iPads placed side by side. This ambitious design aims to merge portability with an expansive display, targeting both productivity and entertainment users.
Mark Gurman, a reliable Apple analyst, revealed in his Power On newsletter that the foldable iPad’s development has been in progress for years. One of Apple’s main goals is to eliminate the visible crease—a design flaw that has plagued other foldable devices in the market. Prototypes from Apple’s industrial design team reportedly feature a near-invisible crease, a significant improvement over competitors like Samsung.
“Apple designers are developing something akin to a giant iPad that unfolds into the size of two iPad Pros side by side,” Gurman stated. “The company has made progress on this front, but it’s too early to tell if the crease issue can be fully resolved.”
The foldable iPad is expected to run on iPadOS or an advanced version of the operating system, optimized for larger, foldable displays. Gurman suggests that by 2028, iPadOS will likely support most macOS applications, further bridging the gap between Apple's tablet and desktop ecosystems. This functionality could make the foldable iPad a versatile tool for professionals and casual users alike.
Apple’s conservative approach to foldable technology reflects its emphasis on design perfection. Unlike Samsung, which debuted its foldable phones five years ago, Apple has held off on releasing foldable devices until the technology matures. This strategy aligns with Apple’s history of entering markets after refining and improving existing technologies.
In addition to the foldable iPad, Apple has reportedly shifted its focus within its foldable MacBook project. The company is now prioritizing an 18.8-inch version of the device, abandoning earlier plans for a larger 20.25-inch model.
While foldable devices have yet to achieve mainstream popularity, Apple’s entry into the space could catalyze broader adoption. However, with a launch window still four years away, the company has ample time to address technical challenges and refine its offering.
