Indonesia is making significant strides in its transition to a sustainable energy future. PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), the state-owned electricity company, has announced plans to add 1,100 public electric vehicle charging stations (SPKLU) by 2025, aiming to create a robust infrastructure for the growing electric vehicle (EV) market. As of December 2024, Indonesia has 2,667 SPKLU units, and this expansion reflects PLN's commitment to advancing the nation’s EV ecosystem.
According to Ririn Rachmawardini, PLN’s Executive Vice President of Product Development, this initiative aligns with government policies promoting renewable energy and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. PLN also provides integrated EV Digital Services (EVDS) via the PLN Mobile app, facilitating user-friendly access to EV-related services. Additionally, the company collaborates with startups and public-private partnerships to accelerate SPKLU deployment across Indonesia.
Pioneering Sustainable Innovations
PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo emphasized that developing Indonesia’s green energy ecosystem is pivotal to achieving the country’s Net Zero Emissions (NZE) target by 2060. He highlighted PLN’s innovative use of existing electricity poles to expedite SPKLU installations, significantly reducing costs and time while ensuring widespread availability. PLN recently converted millions of poles into EV charging stations, prioritizing areas with high traffic such as Jakarta and Bekasi, and is set to expand further into regions outside Java.
PLN’s efforts are also complemented by increasing public interest in EVs. Indonesia’s EV market surpassed 1.44 million units in 2024, encompassing motorcycles, cars, and commercial vehicles. This growing adoption highlights the importance of robust charging infrastructure to support market expansion.
Driving Collaboration and Innovation
A recent media roundtable event, Connext Powered by PLN, showcased PLN’s collaboration with innovative startups, including Maka Motors, Dayagreen, Gree, and 360E. These partnerships aim to drive technological advancements and foster sustainable solutions. Darmawan stressed that such collaborations will enable the growth of Indonesia’s green energy ecosystem while opening opportunities for startups to scale their operations.
Abdan Hanif Satria, PLN’s Executive Vice President of Corporate Business Development and Investment, highlighted the importance of creating a supportive platform for startups to share insights and co-develop EV-related technologies. Through these partnerships, PLN seeks to ensure sustainable progress in green energy while fostering innovation in the EV sector.
Towards a Greener Future
PLN’s initiative to expand the SPKLU network underscores its dedication to supporting Indonesia’s energy transition. By leveraging renewable energy sources and developing a seamless EV ecosystem, PLN is paving the way for a sustainable transportation future. These efforts contribute to reducing carbon emissions and fostering energy independence, aligning with the government’s broader goals.
As PLN targets 3,800 SPKLU units by 2025, the company sets an example of how innovative strategies and strong collaborations can accelerate the shift to a cleaner, greener energy landscape.
