Bobobox Prepares for Japan Expansion With Modular Accommodation and Technology

Bobobox is preparing for a phased expansion into Japan by exploring local partners, potential locations and operating models for a pilot modular accommodation project (28/09).

The expansion is part of Bobobox’s strategy to bring its modular and technology-based accommodation model to international markets.

The company operates two main accommodation lines: Bobopod, which provides capsule accommodation in urban areas, and Bobocabin, which offers stays in natural destinations with modern facilities.

Bobobox Explores Partners and Locations in Japan

Bobobox plans to use its network through the TSE Asia Startup Hub 2026 program to build relationships with potential Japanese partners.

The discussions will cover product concepts, potential locations and operating models that fit the characteristics of the Japanese market.

Bobobox Co-Founder and CEO Indra Gunawan said the company has wanted from the beginning to develop an Indonesian accommodation product that can compete in the global market.

“Japan has an important position in our journey to become a world-class hospitality company because product standards and service excellence there are among the highest benchmarks in the world,” he said in a statement on Monday (28/9).

“This initial step is important so that we can understand the market and determine our approach to developing there,” Gunawan added.

Bobobox has not disclosed the location of its first property in Japan, the number of properties planned, the investment value or the target opening schedule.

TSE Asia Startup Hub Supports Bobobox’s Japan Expansion

Bobobox’s move toward Japan follows its selection as one of seven new companies in the TSE Asia Startup Hub 2026 program established by the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE).

On September 25, 2026, TSE announced 23 companies from 10 countries and regions as participants in this year’s program. Bobobox International Pte. Ltd. became the second Indonesian company selected for the program after Shipper, which was selected in 2024.

The TSE Asia Startup Hub program is designed to help Asian companies expand their businesses in Japan, establish relationships with Japanese companies, receive business development and funding support, and prepare for potential IPOs on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

Bobobox Has 39 Locations in Indonesia

Bobobox’s expansion into Japan follows about eight years of developing its business network in Indonesia.

According to TSE’s official profile, Bobobox currently has 39 locations in 20 cities, with more than 1,750 pods and cabins.

TSE records Bobobox’s business model as relying on modular product design, technology-based operations and strategic partnerships to support efficient and replicable expansion.

Bobopod targets urban accommodation needs through private and affordable capsule rooms. Bobocabin focuses on stays in natural destinations with an approach closer to the cabin concept.

Both business lines use modular design and technology integration in their operations. This approach allows Bobobox to develop relatively standardized accommodation formats while adapting them to locations and consumer needs.

“Mediating products that are accepted and trusted in Japan will be a recognition in itself, as well as a milestone for us to move into broader international markets,” Gunawan said.

Japan Recorded 42.68 Million Foreign Tourist Visits in 2025

Data from the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) shows that foreign tourist visits to Japan reached 42.68 million in 2025.

The number increased 15.8 percent from 2024 and was the highest figure on record.

Bobobox Has Raised US$21.32 Million

Japan is also being positioned by Bobobox as a potential gateway to funding and the capital market.

CB Insights data shows that Bobobox has raised approximately US$21.32 million through five funding rounds. The latest recorded round was a US$8.32 million Series B in September 2023.

The investors included Kakao Investment, Alpha JWC Ventures, Best Trade Developments, Castle Bravo and Emtek.

The TSE Asia Startup Hub also has a capital-market component. TSE says the program is intended to help Asian startups accelerate growth, expand their presence in Japan and pursue potential IPO opportunities on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

“In the long term, we also aspire to list on the Tokyo Stock Exchange,” Gunawan said.
