Indonesia's electric vehicle (EV) sector is rapidly growing, with an increase in both sales and charging station usage. A key driver of this growth is the surge in transactions at Stasiun Pengisian Kendaraan Listrik Umum (SPKLU) operated by PT PLN (Persero). According to PLN's CEO, Darmawan Prasodjo, SPKLU usage has surged fivefold in recent months, mainly driven by Chinese car manufacturers, particularly BYD, which saw exceptional sales figures in 2024. In response to this trend, PLN is preparing for an even greater increase in demand by expanding the network of charging stations across the country, with a focus on rest areas along major toll roads​.

The recent increase in SPKLU transactions was especially notable during the 2024 Idul Fitri holiday season. Between H+1 and H+7 of the holiday, PLN recorded over 11,000 charging sessions, a significant rise from the 2,275 sessions in the same period the year before. This surge in usage is not only a result of more electric vehicles on the road but also reflects a broader trend of sustainable transport gaining popularity among Indonesians. PLN’s commitment to addressing this increased demand is clear, as it aims to ensure no long queues for EV owners at charging stations.

Darmawan emphasized that the growth of EV sales, especially from BYD, was a key factor in this surge. BYD, which began selling its electric vehicles in Indonesia in mid-2024, has seen impressive sales figures, contributing to a higher volume of charging transactions at SPKLU facilities. With these developments, PLN is focused on continuing its expansion efforts to support the growing EV market​.

As the electric vehicle market in Indonesia continues to expand, the government and private sector are working together to make the transition to greener energy sources smoother for both consumers and infrastructure providers.
