Pertamina and ERIA Sign Energy Transition MoU to Boost ASEAN Energy Policy Research Collaboration

Pertamina and the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on “Research Collaboration and Joint Study on the Development of Sustainable Energy Transition Pathways” in Jakarta (23/05).

The signing ceremony was part of the IPA Convex 2026 series, marking a formal collaboration between the two institutions in advancing energy transition research and policy development.

Collaboration Focuses on Energy Policy Analysis and Economic Studies

The MoU outlines cooperation in two main areas: energy policy and economic analysis, as well as capacity building and knowledge exchange.

Implementation of the agreement will be carried out by Pertamina Energy Institute as the company’s strategic think tank. The collaboration is expected to support policy studies based on research, comprehensive energy economic analysis, and institutional strengthening aligned with long-term corporate strategy.

Emma Sri Martini, Director of Portfolio Strategy and Business Development at Pertamina, stated that the partnership will support research-based policy development and strengthen institutional capabilities aligned with business portfolio development.

“Through this partnership with ERIA, Pertamina will obtain support in the form of research-based policy studies, comprehensive energy economic analysis, and institutional capacity strengthening,” she said.

Pertamina Implements Dual Growth Strategy in Energy Transition

Emma Sri Martini explained that Pertamina is committed to supporting national energy independence while advancing energy transition efforts.

She emphasized that the company applies a Dual Growth Strategy, which simultaneously promotes energy self-sufficiency and energy transition initiatives.

“Kemandirian energi dan transisi energi merupakan dua strategi yang dijalankan oleh Pertamina secara bersamaan,” she stated, translated as: “Energy independence and energy transition are two strategies implemented by Pertamina simultaneously.”

She also noted that the two strategies reinforce each other, supporting the company’s broader transformation agenda.

Capacity Building and Regional Cooperation Strengthened Through Partnership

The collaboration also aims to strengthen Pertamina’s strategic position in the region amid global energy transition dynamics.

Emma Sri Martini stated that cooperation with international think tanks will enhance the capacity of all involved parties.

“With collaboration with various stakeholders, including international-level think tanks, it will increase the capacity of all parties,” she said.

In the same event, Pertamina Group also signed several additional cooperation agreements, including CCS-related collaborations involving PT Pertamina (Persero), PT Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE), Perusahaan Gas Negara (PGN), PT Pupuk Indonesia, and Exxon in the Asri Basin.

Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia is an international think tank established in 2007, focusing on economic and policy research in ASEAN and East Asia, and supported by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI).
