New Government Policy Sets AI in Education Rules for Students from Early Childhood to University Level

Seven Indonesian ministries have agreed on guidelines for the use of digital technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education to ensure children benefit from technology while being protected from risks in the digital space (12/03).

The guidelines are formalized in the Joint Decree of Seven Ministers on Guidelines for the Utilization and Learning of Digital and AI Technology in Formal, Nonformal, and Informal Education, covering students from early childhood to higher education.

Age-Appropriate AI Use Emphasized by Pratikno

Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, Pratikno, explained that regulating technology use according to children’s age and readiness is crucial.

“Utilization of digital technology and artificial intelligence for children must be done wisely, providing positive benefits while minimizing risks. Age criteria and child readiness are very important in its regulation,” Pratikno said after the signing at the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture office in Central Jakarta (12/03).

He added that the younger the child, the more controlled the use of technology should be, including limitations on duration and types of content used for learning.

Meutya Hafid Highlights Large Child Internet Users

Minister of Communication and Digital, Meutya Hafid, stressed the importance of the policy given Indonesia’s large number of child internet users.

“Indonesia has a very large number of children using the internet. Therefore, we must ensure they are not merely targets or consumers for the tech industry, but can utilize technology according to their readiness,” Meutya said.

She noted that this regulation ensures that digital and AI technology bring real benefits to education.

“Every technological progress must consider the user’s readiness, especially children. The principle of ‘Wait Until Children Are Ready,’ promoted in child digital protection policy (PP TUNAS), also applies to AI use in education,” she added.

Policy Supports Schools, Teachers, and Families

The government hopes the guidelines will help schools, teachers, and families use digital technology appropriately, so Indonesian children can learn technology early without neglecting their cognitive and character development.

The Joint Decree was signed by Coordinating Minister Pratikno, Minister Meutya Hafid, Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Brian Yuliarto, Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu’ti, Minister of Women Empowerment and Child Protection Arifah Choiri Fauzi, Minister of Population and Family Development Wihaji, and Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar.
