Indonesia Strengthens Jewelry Industry Quality Standards to Boost Global Competitiveness and Market Trust

The Ministry of Industry continues to improve the quality assurance of national gold products amid rising global gold prices, which have increased demand and production in the jewelry sector (09/03). Ensuring accurate gold testing is seen as key to maintaining market trust and enhancing Indonesia’s competitiveness in the global jewelry market.

Indonesian Jewelry Exports Surge in 2025

Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita stated that the Indonesian jewelry industry showed strong performance in 2025. Exports of jewelry and valuable goods reached USD 9.1 billion, a 65.54% increase from the previous year, reflecting high global interest in Indonesian jewelry products.

“This growth shows that Indonesia’s jewelry industry has significant opportunities to expand internationally. This positive momentum must be maintained through strengthened quality and trust in domestic products,” he said in Jakarta on Monday (09/03).

Accurate Gold Testing Gains Importance

As production and global demand rise, ensuring accurate testing of gold content is increasingly important. “Laboratories play a strategic role in ensuring the proper content of precious metals so that products in the market meet clear and accountable quality standards,” the minister added.

To support this, the government encourages laboratories and industry participants to join the Proficiency Testing Program (PUP). This program compares the testing capabilities of multiple laboratories objectively to produce consistent and reliable results.

Proficiency Testing Program Enhances Standards

Emmy Suryandari, Head of the Agency for Standardization and Industrial Services Policy (BSKJI), explained that the program is crucial for the Indonesian jewelry industry to achieve more accurate and trustworthy testing standards.

“We continue to promote the application of standards in the industry, especially to ensure the quality of products in the market. The Proficiency Testing Program is very important for industrial laboratories testing gold quality to validate their results, which will ultimately improve the national gold industry’s competitiveness globally,” she said.

The program is conducted by the Industry Craft and Batik Standardization and Service Center (BBSPJIKB), a unit under BSKJI. It is the first and only program in Indonesia for gold product testing, serving as a national reference for quality assurance.

Program Open to All Sectors and Laboratories

Zya Labiba, Head of BBSPJIKB, said that the PUP service is available to all sectors, including industry, private institutions, and government, whether the laboratories are accredited or not. The program provides benefits such as proving compliance with SNI ISO/IEC 17025:2017 Clause 7.7.2, evaluating laboratory performance, and ensuring accurate testing.

“The program uses a simultaneous scheme, where test objects are distributed and tested within a set period. This allows results from each laboratory to be compared objectively, measurably, and transparently,” Zya added.

Kemenperin, through BBSPJIKB, is committed to supporting gold product companies to improve quality and reliability while contributing to strengthening the national gold industry’s competitiveness.
