Telkom Employees Lead Mangrove Planting Drive at Semarang Mangrove Center to Fight Climate Risks

PT Telkom Indonesia (Persero) Tbk carried out a mangrove planting initiative in the coastal area of Semarang through its AYO BERAKSI program to support ecosystem recovery and climate change mitigation (24/02).

The activity was held at Semarang Mangrove Center (SMC) and involved 13 selected employee volunteers.

The initiative followed findings from Badan Riset dan Inovasi Nasional (BRIN) in 2025, which reported a significant decline in mangrove cover along Semarang’s coast over the past decade.

AYO BERAKSI Program Engages Employee Volunteers

AYO BERAKSI is an internal volunteer competition designed to encourage employee participation in addressing social and environmental challenges.

Through a gradual selection process, five Best of the Best teams were chosen: AiDareU, INOVAKSI, Green Drop, MAKE Impact, and BATUMBUAH.

These teams took part in a series of conservation activities in Semarang as part of the program.

Mangrove Degradation Raises Coastal Risks

According to BRIN data, mangrove degradation weakens its ecological function as a natural coastal protector and blue carbon absorber.

This condition increases the risk of coastal abrasion and threatens the sustainability of coastal ecosystems.

The company stated that cross-sector collaboration is important to ensure that restoration efforts are measurable and sustainable.

Senior General Manager Social Responsibility Telkom, Hery Susanto, said employee involvement reflects the company’s commitment to sustainable social impact.

“As a leading digital telco company, Telkom not only focuses on service development and technological transformation, but is also committed to making tangible contributions to society and the environment. Through this activity, we hope the mangrove planting action can help mitigate the impacts of climate change and protect coastal areas from the threat of abrasion,” he said.

Three-Day Program Combines Planting, Education, and Training

During the three-day program, volunteers planted mangrove seedlings to rehabilitate coastal areas.

They also provided environmental education to elementary school students about the importance of protecting the environment.

In addition, participants attended batik training using natural dyes derived from mangroves to help reduce waste around SMC.

Initiative Aligns with SDGs Climate and Marine Goals

The initiative is part of Telkom’s Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) implementation.

It aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 13 on Climate Action and Goal 14 on Life Below Water.

Telkom stated it will continue strengthening collaboration to promote environmental philanthropy and support national coastal ecosystem recovery efforts.
