Bank Indonesia Plans QRIS Expansion to China & South Korea in Q1 2026 to Ease Global Payments

Bank Indonesia (BI) aims to expand the QRIS payment system to China and South Korea by the first quarter of 2026 (01/01), following successful adoption in ASEAN countries and Japan.

BI plans to implement QRIS in a total of eight countries in 2026. In addition to China and South Korea, the expansion builds on partnerships with Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, and Japan, with India also considered for inclusion.

The expansion is designed to allow Indonesian travelers to make transactions in local currencies without exchanging cash. BI emphasizes that Local Currency Transactions (LCT) will improve efficiency and reduce transaction costs for both users and merchants.

For 2026, BI sets targets of 60 million users, 45 million merchants, and a transaction volume of 17 billion. This initiative aligns with the rapid growth of QRIS usage in Indonesia and the central bank’s commitment to supporting a digital payment ecosystem.
