Anthropic Nears $170B Valuation with Potential $5B Funding Round Led by Iconiq Capital

Anthropic is reportedly close to securing a funding round between $3 billion and $5 billion, potentially raising the artificial intelligence company’s valuation to $170 billion, Bloomberg reported.

The round is being led by Iconiq Capital, with the possibility of a second lead investor joining the deal.

According to the report, Anthropic has also been in talks with Qatar Investment Authority and GIC, Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund.

If finalized, the deal would nearly triple the company’s valuation, which stood at $61.5 billion after a $3.5 billion round led by Lightspeed Venture Partners in March.

That previous round included participation from Bessemer Venture Partners, Cisco Investments, D1 Capital Partners, Fidelity Management & Research Company, General Catalyst, Jane Street, Menlo Ventures, and Salesforce Ventures.

Despite positioning itself as a safety-conscious AI model developer, internal concerns have emerged over the source of funding.

In a memo to employees, reported by Wired, CEO Dario Amodei expressed discomfort with accepting money from sovereign wealth funds of authoritarian governments.

“Unfortunately, I think ‘No bad person should ever benefit from our success’ is a pretty difficult principle to run a business on,” Amodei wrote in the leaked memo.

Anthropic did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
