Tools for Humanity (TFH), the startup behind World App, stated that it does not provide Worldcoin tokens as compensation for users registering on the platform.
This comes amid viral claims that individuals received payments in exchange for retina scans.
"World does not offer Worldcoin as compensation for the World ID verification process. Claiming the token is optional," said a TFH representative to CNNIndonesia.com on Monday (5/5).
Tokens Offered as Incentives, Not Registration Rewards
TFH emphasized that the tokens distributed through World App serve as incentives for exploring the platform, not rewards for completing registration or biometric verification.
“These tokens serve as incentives for users to explore and utilize the World network, which offers various useful services,” the spokesperson explained.
The services can be accessed through mini applications within World App, where users can interact with features provided by developers on the World network.
Viral Incidents Raise Concerns Over Biometric Practices
The platform drew attention after reports surfaced of people receiving money after scanning their retina at registration points, including one in Bekasi. This triggered public concern about the exploitation of personal data.
These events sparked scrutiny over the use of biometric information in exchange for perceived financial compensation during the registration process.
Indonesian Authorities Suspend World App’s Operations
Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) responded by suspending World App’s operating license to prevent potential harm.
"This suspension is a preventive step to mitigate potential risks to the public. We will also summon PT Terang Bulan Abadi for an official clarification soon," said Alexander Sabar, Director General of Digital Space Supervision at Komdigi.
Initial investigations revealed PT Terang Bulan Abadi is not registered as an Electronic System Provider (PSE) and lacks the required TDPSE. Worldcoin operates under TDPSE registered to PT Sandina Abadi Nusantara.
TFH Outlines Iris Scan Process and Data Handling
TFH stated that it does not store personal or biometric data, and the technology used is designed solely to verify human uniqueness.
"We reiterate that we do not store personal or biometric data. Our technology is designed to verify the uniqueness of individuals in the AI era, without storing any personal or biometric information," the company said.
During verification, a device called the Orb captures an image of the eye to generate a numerical code, known as an iris code. This code is used only to prove a user is a unique individual.
The code is cryptographically processed and anonymized so it cannot be traced back to any person. TFH said the anonymized data is stored separately by trusted third parties such as universities.
"Original images and iris codes are encrypted and sent to the user’s device, then deleted from the camera, so users retain full control over their data," the company explained.
