Indonesia Reaches 97% 4G Coverage Through Industry Collaboration

Indonesia has reached a major achievement in digital infrastructure development through collaboration between the government and the national telecommunications industry. Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital, Nezar Patria, credited the Indonesian Telematics Society (MASTEL) for its role in supporting the goals of the Indonesia Broadband Blueprint 2014.

“MASTEL played a role in drafting the Indonesia Broadband Blueprint 2014, which laid the foundation for equal internet access across the country. Because of this collaboration, in 2025 we achieved 97.45 percent 4G coverage in residential areas,” said Nezar at a MASTEL Halal Bihalal event in South Jakarta on Wednesday, April 23, 2025.

MASTEL’s Continued Role in Supporting 5G and Fair Competition

Nezar encouraged MASTEL to continue supporting the development of the telecommunications sector, especially by promoting healthy industry competition. He emphasized MASTEL’s relevance as a non-profit platform uniting key digital industry stakeholders in Indonesia.

“Of course, we need to continue this collaboration because the work is not done, especially to increase 5G coverage, which is currently only around 4.44 percent,” he said.

Vision Indonesia Digital 2045 Based on Four Key Pillars

According to Nezar, the government’s digital development agenda aligns with Vision Indonesia Digital (VID) 2045, which is based on four pillars: digital infrastructure, digital society, digital economy, and digital government.

“The first is digital infrastructure. We must ensure 100 percent of Indonesia’s residential areas are covered by high-speed internet. We hope to reach 100 Gbps, and getting there will require strong collaboration within the MASTEL ecosystem,” Nezar explained.

Building Digital Skills and Economic Resilience

Speaking on the second pillar, digital society, Nezar said the Ministry is working to improve public digital literacy to help people adopt new technologies more actively.

“The digital economy is just as important. We need to strengthen the economic ecosystem with digital players and pay attention to MSMEs adopting new technology,” he said.

Government Must Keep Pace with Fast-Changing Technology

For the digital government pillar, Nezar stressed the need for the public sector to keep up with fast-moving technology.

“Technology is moving so fast, and we still have a number of digital gap knowledge programs, including in the government sector,” he added.

Nezar also highlighted the importance of improving digital awareness and cybersecurity among government officials.

“Without collaboration with MASTEL, I believe this Vision Indonesia Digital 2045 will be difficult to realize, because here we have all the players in digital technology, infrastructure, and IT governance. Without strong collaboration, I think our next steps will be difficult,” he said.
