PLN Green Hydrogen Production: Driving Indonesia's Sustainable Energy Transition

Indonesia's state-owned electricity company, PT PLN (Persero), has made significant strides in the nation's energy transition by advancing its green hydrogen production capabilities. Through the establishment of multiple Green Hydrogen Plants (GHPs), PLN is positioning itself at the forefront of sustainable energy solutions in Southeast Asia.

Expanding Green Hydrogen Infrastructure

PLN has inaugurated 21 Green Hydrogen Plants across Indonesia, marking a substantial increase in the country's capacity to produce green hydrogen. These facilities collectively have the capability to produce up to 199 tons of green hydrogen annually. The green hydrogen is generated using renewable energy sources, including solar power and Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) from various renewable energy plants in Indonesia .

The strategic placement of these GHPs in locations such as PLTGU Muara Karang, PLTU Suralaya, and PLTGU Tanjung Priok ensures a widespread distribution network, facilitating the integration of green hydrogen into various sectors of the economy.

Supporting Clean Transportation

A significant portion of the green hydrogen produced—approximately 124 tons annually—is allocated for use in the transportation sector. This initiative supports the development of hydrogen-powered vehicles, offering a clean alternative to traditional fossil fuels. PLN's efforts include the establishment of Hydrogen Refueling Stations (HRS), with the first station inaugurated in Senayan, Jakarta.

The utilization of green hydrogen in transportation not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions but also decreases the nation's reliance on imported fuels. By replacing conventional fuels with domestically produced green hydrogen, Indonesia can enhance its energy security and contribute to global efforts to combat climate change.

Advancing Energy Transition Goals

PLN's green hydrogen production aligns with Indonesia's commitment to achieving Net Zero Emissions by 2060. By investing in renewable energy technologies and infrastructure, PLN is facilitating a shift towards a more sustainable and resilient energy system.

The company's initiatives also include plans to develop additional hydrogen refueling stations and fuel cell generators powered by green hydrogen. These developments are expected to further integrate green hydrogen into the nation's energy mix, supporting various industrial applications and promoting economic growth.
