In a significant move to enhance sustainable computing, AMD and Fujitsu have announced a new strategic partnership aimed at creating high-performance computing platforms for AI and high-performance computing (HPC) applications. The collaboration was formalized with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on November 1, 2024, and focuses on the development of open-source, energy-efficient computing systems tailored to meet the growing demands of AI and HPC workloads.
Both companies recognize the rapid growth of artificial intelligence, particularly generative AI, and the increasing need for optimized architectures to meet varying price and power performance configurations. AMD has long supported an open ecosystem, empowering customers with the freedom of choice in their computing needs, while Fujitsu has been working on the FUJITSU-MONAKA processor—a next-generation Arm-based chip designed to deliver high performance while reducing power consumption. Together, FUJITSU-MONAKA and AMD Instinct™ accelerators aim to provide customers with efficient, scalable solutions for large-scale AI workloads while reducing the overall cost of ownership for data centers.
The two companies plan to collaborate in three primary areas: engineering, ecosystem development, and business outreach. Their goal is to deliver innovative computing platforms for AI and HPC by 2027. The collaboration will combine Fujitsu's world-leading supercomputer technology with AMD's industry-leading GPU technologies. By leveraging AMD ROCm™ software, an open-source AI and HPC software stack, alongside Fujitsu's Arm-based software, the partnership will further strengthen open-source AI and HPC development within the broader tech ecosystem.
This collaboration is set to significantly expand the global AI computing platform market. The companies aim to provide an open, sustainable, and cost-effective solution that accelerates the deployment of AI across industries. As part of the partnership, AMD and Fujitsu will co-market these new AI platforms, helping businesses transition to sustainable AI practices while also advancing societal implementation of AI.
According to Vivek Mahajan, Corporate Vice President and CTO of Fujitsu, the partnership is a critical step toward achieving sustainable computing. He emphasized the importance of reducing power consumption in data centers and creating more accessible AI solutions for businesses across the globe. "By combining AMD's cutting-edge GPU technology with Fujitsu's energy-efficient processors, we will create an environment where more companies can adopt AI while maintaining energy efficiency," said Mahajan.
Phil Guido, Executive Vice President at AMD, echoed these sentiments, noting that the partnership highlights AMD's commitment to delivering high-performance, energy-efficient solutions for AI and HPC customers. Guido also expressed excitement about expanding the company’s relationship in Japan, a key region for technological innovation and sustainability efforts.
The partnership between AMD and Fujitsu also represents a significant commitment to advancing Japan’s leadership in the technology sector, particularly in the fields of AI and high-performance computing. The collaboration will not only improve the efficiency of AI workloads but also provide businesses with the tools needed to reduce the environmental impact of their computing infrastructure.
Both companies will continue to focus on developing and promoting the open-source AI ecosystem, enhancing software tools to support the next generation of AI and HPC systems. By 2027, this collaboration aims to bring about transformative changes in the way AI and computing are integrated into society, offering solutions that are both innovative and sustainable.
