Transition to Organic Agriculture: Ponorogo's Plan for 25,000 Hectares by 2029

Ponorogo Regency, under the leadership of Bupati Sugiri Sancoko, is taking significant strides toward sustainable agriculture by promoting organic farming practices. In a recent address at the Department of Agriculture, Food Security, and Livestock in Ponorogo, Bupati Sugiri emphasized the importance of reducing reliance on chemical fertilizers and transitioning to organic alternatives to enhance soil fertility and provide healthier food sources for the community.

Ponorogo's Ambitious Organic Farming Goals

Bupati Sugiri has set a visionary target for the region: by 2029, 25,000 hectares of Ponorogo's 34,000 hectares of arable land should be dedicated to organic farming. This initiative aims to not only improve the quality of produce but also to increase the economic value for farmers, as organic products typically command higher market prices. The transition to organic farming is also expected to address health concerns, with the goal of reducing illness rates by providing cleaner, chemical-free food options.

Initiatives Supporting the Organic Transition

To kickstart this ambitious plan, the Ponorogo government has begun distributing organic fertilizers to local farmers. In January 2025, Bupati Sugiri personally handed out 1,000 liters of Bio orGanik Frend (BG Frend), an organic liquid fertilizer produced from cow manure by local farmers in Bangunsari. This initiative not only provides farmers with essential resources but also encourages the use of locally produced, sustainable farming inputs. The use of BG Frend has already shown promising results, with some areas reporting a 10-20% increase in productivity over three years of application.

Collaborative Efforts and Community Engagement

The success of this organic farming initiative heavily relies on the collaboration between agricultural extension officers, farmer groups, and other stakeholders. Bupati Sugiri has called upon these groups to actively engage with farmers, providing education and support throughout the transition process. The government is committed to being present in every innovation undertaken by the community, ensuring that necessary resources and guidance are readily available. This collective effort aims to build trust among farmers, demonstrating the tangible benefits of organic farming and encouraging widespread adoption of sustainable practices.

In conclusion, Ponorogo's commitment to expanding organic farming is a multifaceted approach to achieving sustainable food security, enhancing farmer welfare, and promoting environmental conservation. Through strategic planning, resource distribution, and community collaboration, the region is poised to become a model for organic agriculture in Indonesia.
