The Indonesian government is implementing key agricultural initiatives to enhance rice production and achieve food self-sufficiency. Programs such as swamp land optimization (Opla), pump irrigation, expansion of planting areas, and mechanization have been proven to increase farming efficiency and yield. With strong support from President Prabowo Subianto, the Ministry of Agriculture remains confident in eliminating Indonesia’s dependency on rice imports.
Pump Irrigation System Enhances Water Availability
One of the most effective initiatives introduced by the government is pump irrigation, which allows farmers to access water in drought-prone and rain-fed areas. This program has helped increase cropping intensity and expand planting seasons, ensuring continuous rice production throughout the year. Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman emphasized that modern irrigation techniques are key to achieving national food security.
Expanding Planting Areas to Meet National Demand
The government is also expanding the total rice cultivation area to increase production. According to the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), national rice production for January-March 2025 is projected to reach 8.67 million tons, marking a 52.32% increase compared to the same period in 2024. This surge is attributed to the expansion of potential harvested areas to 2.83 million hectares, a substantial growth from the 1.86 million hectares in early 2024.
Mechanization and Fertilizer Support Drive Efficiency
Modern agricultural technology plays a vital role in boosting productivity. The Ministry of Agriculture has focused on mechanization, improved irrigation infrastructure, and providing adequate subsidized fertilizers to support farmers. The implementation of modern farming techniques allows for more efficient land use, helping Indonesia move closer to achieving food independence.
Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman reaffirmed that these efforts will not only increase food availability but also stabilize rice prices in the domestic market and improve farmers’ livelihoods. The government remains committed to ensuring sustainable growth in the agricultural sector and eliminating rice imports in the future.
