Indonesia Establishes Space Association to Advance Aerospace Technology and Innovation

Indonesia has taken a significant step in advancing its aerospace ambitions with the official establishment of the Indonesian Space Association (Asosiasi Antariksa Indonesia). This association, launched on January 21, 2025, in Jakarta, aims to foster collaboration among industry players, professionals, and experts to build a dynamic aerospace ecosystem.

The association’s mission is clear: to promote technological advancements, industry development, and regulatory frameworks in the aerospace sector, ultimately strengthening Indonesia's strategic role in the global space industry. Key figures driving this initiative include Adi Rahman Adiwoso, a prominent satellite industry leader; Aryo PS Djojohadikusumo, a young entrepreneur; and David Fernando Audy, a notable professional in the field.

The launch event was attended by influential stakeholders such as Dr. Penny Radjendra, Chair of the National Air and Space Power Center of Indonesia (NASPCI), and Dr. Robertus Heru Triharjanto, Head of the Aviation and Space Research Organization at the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN).

A Vision for Aerospace Independence

Adi Rahman Adiwoso, Chairman of the Indonesian Space Association, emphasized the importance of strong national commitment to developing aerospace technology. He highlighted the transition from being mere users of space technology to becoming producers and innovators. This transformation is expected to position Indonesia as a competitive force in the global aerospace industry.

The association aims to establish sustainable collaboration between the government, private sector, defense entities, and research institutions to achieve independence in space access. Adi stated that the association will prioritize enhancing Indonesia's strategic role in the global space economy while contributing to national development, security, and prosperity.

Strategic Significance for Indonesia

The association also aligns with President Prabowo Subianto’s Asta Cita vision, focusing on national defense, food, energy, and water sovereignty. Secretary General Aryo PS Djojohadikusumo underscored the vital role of aerospace technology in addressing geopolitical and economic challenges. Technologies like satellite-based remote sensing are essential for monitoring natural resources, optimizing agricultural practices, and discovering new energy resources.

“Space technology enables sovereign access to critical data, supporting food and energy production while enhancing national security,” Aryo explained.

Support from Key Institutions

The establishment of the Indonesian Space Association has garnered praise from various organizations. NASPCI Chair Dr. Penny Radjendra highlighted its potential to strengthen Indonesia's sovereign access to space, benefiting government, military, private, and research institutions. Meanwhile, BRIN expressed its full support for the association, with plans for joint research, innovation, and talent development initiatives.

According to Dr. Robertus Heru, BRIN will play a central role in space-related functions, including satellite licensing and launch coordination. The agency is also preparing a regulation for Indonesia’s first spaceport, which is expected to further elevate the country’s aerospace capabilities.

A Collaborative Future for Indonesia’s Space Industry

The Indonesian Space Association aims to raise awareness and educate stakeholders on the importance of space technology in driving economic growth, national security, and innovation. Through strategic collaborations and long-term initiatives, the association envisions Indonesia becoming a global leader in the aerospace sector.

With its formation, Indonesia is well-positioned to leverage space technology for national and international advancements, fostering a brighter and more innovative future in the aerospace industry.
