Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemkomdigi) is initiating discussions with various stakeholders to create a comprehensive regulatory framework for artificial intelligence (AI). According to Vice Minister Nezar Patria, the ministry plans a series of six meetings over the next two to three months involving industry leaders, academics, civil society, and vulnerable groups, including women and people with disabilities.
These discussions aim to identify critical aspects requiring regulation in AI development and utilization, spanning the entire AI value chain. "We’ll create a series of discussions over approximately two to three months, with six meetings involving all stakeholders," said Nezar in Jakarta on Wednesday, January 15, 2025.
The result of these consultations will be compiled into a policy paper. Nezar explained that this document would serve as the foundation for providing academic advice to the government when drafting AI-related regulations.
The urgency to regulate AI has been emphasized by Communications and Digital Minister Meutya Hafid, who stated that a regulatory framework would be developed within three months. "Within three months, we will create the regulation," Meutya said on January 13.
Currently, the government has issued a circular on AI usage guidelines, which include principles such as transparency, accountability, human-centered approaches, respect for intellectual property, and safety. The circular is expected to evolve into more robust and binding regulations.
Nezar added that the forthcoming rules aim to ensure responsible AI deployment across various sectors, including education, healthcare, infrastructure, and financial services. He noted that these principles would be integrated vertically into sector-specific regulations to maximize AI's benefits while mitigating risks.
The ministry's proactive approach reflects a growing global trend to address the challenges and opportunities presented by AI. With concerns around ethical usage, data privacy, and potential biases in AI systems, establishing clear guidelines is seen as crucial for fostering innovation while protecting societal interests.
