Indonesia's Push for SMK Education with AI and Coding

The Indonesian government is exploring the integration of coding and artificial intelligence (AI) into the curriculum of Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan (SMK), or vocational high schools. This initiative, led by Fajar Riza Ul Haq, the Vice Minister of Education and Culture, aims to bolster STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) across the country.

Fajar emphasizes that AI and coding are not just about technical skills but also about developing essential soft skills like problem-solving, patience, and efficiency. "Training students in these areas is key to helping them tackle challenges effectively," he says. This initiative is aligned with Indonesia’s broader educational goals of preparing students for the demands of the modern workforce.

Furthermore, Fajar stresses the importance of digital citizenship, which focuses on using technology ethically, safely, and responsibly. "While technology is a tool, we must ensure that humans remain in control and that students are taught ethical principles in using technology," he explains.

Tatang Muttaqin, Acting Director General for Vocational Education, underscores that AI and coding are tools to help students achieve critical 21st-century competencies, such as critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration. These competencies are essential for navigating an ever-evolving global landscape.

The government is keen on aligning the curriculum across all education levels, including SMK, to prepare future generations for the AI-driven economy. The success of this initiative hinges on effective curriculum alignment and collaboration across educational sectors.
