Apple's Vision Pro, launched in February 2024, has faced disappointing sales, with only about 500,000 units sold. To tackle this issue, the company is reportedly planning a new partnership with Sony to integrate PlayStation VR2 controllers into the Vision Pro’s ecosystem. This collaboration aims to expand the device's appeal.
The partnership between Apple and Sony has reportedly been in development for several months. The PlayStation VR2 controllers, designed specifically for immersive VR gaming, could offer a more natural and intuitive experience for Vision Pro users. Currently, Apple’s headset supports PlayStation 5 and Xbox controllers, but these devices are not optimized for the augmented reality experience that Vision Pro offers.
One key limitation of the existing controllers is their lack of six degrees of freedom (6DOF), which is essential for precise VR control. This feature is critical for creating an immersive VR experience where the user can move freely within the virtual environment. The PlayStation VR2 controller, however, is designed with 6DOF in mind, making it a better fit for the Vision Pro.
Sony currently bundles its PlayStation VR2 controllers with its own VR headset, but that distribution model may change if the partnership with Apple moves forward. If this occurs, Apple could sell the controllers separately through its online stores or retail outlets, offering them as an optional accessory for Vision Pro users.
While gaming could be a major draw, the PlayStation VR2 controller could also enhance other use cases, such as media editing and productivity tasks within Apple's visionOS. The controller’s thumbsticks and directional pad would replace the finger pinch gestures used to navigate the operating system, making the device easier to control.
Apple has positioned the Vision Pro as a high-end tool for professional work, media editing, and immersive augmented reality experiences. However, expanding the device’s capabilities to include VR gaming could help drive adoption. By introducing PlayStation VR2 support, Apple could tap into the growing VR gaming market, a sector that is already being dominated by devices like Sony’s PlayStation VR and Meta’s Quest headsets.
At this stage, it is unclear when this partnership will be officially announced or when Vision Pro users can expect PlayStation VR2 controller support. While the companies have yet to make an official statement, it is clear that both Apple and Sony see significant potential in this collaboration.
The slow sales of the Vision Pro have raised questions about its market fit. Apple’s high price point and niche audience may have limited its appeal so far. The addition of PlayStation VR2 controller support could help broaden the device's use case and make it more attractive to a wider range of consumers, including gamers.
As the VR gaming market continues to grow, Apple’s decision to add PlayStation VR2 controller support could significantly boost the Vision Pro’s value proposition. Gaming has become an increasingly important part of the tech industry, and by aligning with Sony, Apple could position the Vision Pro as a more competitive product in both professional and entertainment sectors.
