KAI Partners WIFI and Huawei to Boost 5G AI Railway System for Faster Digital Transformation

PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) or KAI has formed a strategic collaboration with PT Solusi Sinergi Digital Tbk (WIFI/Surge) and Huawei to accelerate the adoption of 5G and AI technologies in Indonesia’s railway system (15/04/2026).

The collaboration focuses on improving safety, passenger experience, and operational efficiency through digital innovation in the national rail sector.

MoU Signed at Tanah Abang Station to Drive Digital Transformation

The three parties officially signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at Tanah Abang Station, Jakarta, on Wednesday.

The agreement marks a joint commitment to advance railway digital transformation through the integration of advanced communication and artificial intelligence technologies.

KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin said the company is committed to using advanced technology to improve railway safety and service quality.

He stated that the collaboration with Surge and Huawei will accelerate digital transformation and provide benefits for hundreds of millions of passengers and freight customers across Indonesia.

Surge President Director Yune Marketatmo said the partnership is an important step in modernizing Indonesia’s railway system.

He added that combining Surge’s digital infrastructure expertise, Huawei’s technology, and KAI’s operational leadership will deliver 5G+AI solutions for the railway sector.

5G FRMCS Pilot to Enhance Safety and Smart Rail Operations

One of the key focus areas of the collaboration is the implementation of 5G FRMCS (Future Railway Mobile Communication System).

The system is designed to improve safety, efficiency, and service quality, including real-time communication and intelligent train management.

A pilot project will be conducted on the Rangkasbitung–Tanah Abang commuter line to support level crossing safety and smart train scheduling.

Huawei Smart Rail BU CEO Raymond Zuo said the 5G FRMCS and AI solutions will enable real-time communication, intelligent scheduling, and predictive maintenance for railway operations.

AI Freight Detection and ICT Infrastructure to Improve Efficiency

The collaboration also covers ICT (Information and Communication Technology) infrastructure development, including high-reliability backbone networks and wireless coverage at stations and depots.

It also includes cloud-based solutions designed to ensure business continuity and flexible service expansion.

In addition, an AI-based freight wagon detection system will be developed using video analytics to identify disruptions and provide automatic alerts.

This system is expected to improve operational efficiency and reduce reliance on manual inspections.
