Meta Faces Scrutiny in Indonesia After Data Security Concerns Over Instagram User Accounts

Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemkomdigi) has requested an official explanation from Meta regarding issues related to Instagram user data security and reports about password reset processes (16/01).

The request was directed at Meta as the Electronic System Operator (PSE) of Instagram following public information about a suspected data leak.

Clarification Meeting Held With Meta

Kemkomdigi confirmed that a clarification meeting with Meta took place on January 14, 2026.

Alexander Sabar, Director General of Digital Space Supervision at Kemkomdigi, said Meta explained that the password reset process is an internal mechanism conducted through Instagram’s official system.

Meta Denies External Access to User Passwords

Meta stated that the password reset process does not provide access to user passwords to any other party.

“No user password can be accessed or obtained by any party other than the account owner itself, and there was no indication of misuse of the password reset feature for data retrieval by external parties. The investigation is still ongoing and the results will serve as the basis for further evaluation,” Alexander said.

Investigation Into Alleged Data Leak Ongoing

Regarding information about a suspected data leak linked to third-party reports, Instagram said further investigation is still being carried out to confirm the validity of the issue.

Kemkomdigi said the results of this investigation will be used as the basis for further evaluation.

Ministry Emphasizes Legal Authority and Public Advisory

Alexander emphasized that summoning and clarifying Electronic System Operators is part of Kemkomdigi’s authority under Government Regulation No. 71 of 2019 on the Implementation of Electronic Systems and Transactions.

“The summons of Meta regarding this issue is part of the state’s commitment to protecting personal data and maintaining national digital space security,” he said.

Kemkomdigi urged the public to remain calm, not to be influenced by unverified information, and to continue improving vigilance in securing their digital accounts.
