AREA31 and OneWeb: A Strategic Alliance for Satellite Internet Expansion in Asia-Pacific

PT Dunia Virtual Online Tbk (AREA31) announced a strategic partnership with Eutelsat OneWeb, a global low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite internet provider, aiming to increase revenue by US$20 million over the next decade.

Edi Sugianto, Director of AREA31, highlighted the 10-year collaboration as a milestone in bringing widespread digital connectivity to Indonesia and the Asia-Pacific region.

Expanding Digital Connectivity in Indonesia and Asia-Pacific

The partnership includes the construction of satellite teleport facilities in Ciruas, Serang, Banten, and a Point-of-Presence (PoP) at AREA31's data center in Cimanggis, Depok.

This infrastructure will improve internet access in remote and underserved areas of Indonesia’s thousands of islands.

Michael Alifen, President Director of AREA31, said, “This digital infrastructure will be the main gateway for OneWeb’s LEO satellite services in Indonesia and surrounding areas.”

Revenue Growth Driven by Data Center Services and Virtual Office Solutions

AREA31 expects to grow its revenue by 30% in 2025, reaching Rp80 billion, mostly driven by colocation services.

The company reported Rp29.39 billion revenue in the first half of 2025, a 16.06% increase year-on-year, with Rp27.68 billion contributed by colocation. Profit soared by 297.81% to Rp3.77 billion for the same period.

Edi Sugianto added that virtual office services will be a key diversification strategy, catering to companies adopting hybrid and remote work models.

Key Infrastructure: Satellite Teleport and Point-of-Presence Facilities

The newly built teleport and PoP facilities will serve as critical nodes for distributing OneWeb’s satellite internet across Indonesia and beyond.

Indonesia’s geographic complexity, with over 17,000 islands, makes fiber-optic infrastructure challenging.

LEO satellite technology offers a solution by providing fast, stable, and low-latency internet, even in remote regions.

Impact on Education, Healthcare, and Regional Development

The collaboration aims to improve digital services in education, healthcare, local economies, and government.

Students in remote areas will gain access to online learning, while telemedicine services can reach underserved populations.

Local businesses, especially SMEs, will benefit from expanded internet connectivity to grow their markets.

Satellite communication will also support disaster response by maintaining communication when terrestrial networks fail.

Fabio Mando, Chief Operations Officer of Eutelsat OneWeb, emphasized Indonesia’s strategic importance: “This is part of our global mission to connect everyone, everywhere.”
