Indonesia Strengthens Strategic Energy Transition Cooperation with ExxonMobil to Drive Low-Carbon Growth

The Government of Indonesia is advancing its agenda for a low-carbon economy through strategic cooperation in the energy sector.

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto held a meeting with Wade Floyd, the new CEO of ExxonMobil Indonesia, at the Ministry’s office in Jakarta (1/7).

The discussion focused on strengthening strategic energy collaboration and supporting downstream industrial development.

As part of this cooperation, ExxonMobil and Pertamina are exploring increased imports of crude oil and LPG from the United States.

“This collaboration is part of Indonesia’s broader agenda to realize energy transition, industrial downstreaming, and net-zero emission targets. The government sees synergy with global companies like ExxonMobil as key to building a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable economy, while also strengthening Indonesia’s role in the global energy supply chain,” said Minister Airlangga.

ExxonMobil to Invest $10 Billion in Low-Carbon Infrastructure

ExxonMobil confirmed its commitment to invest USD 10 billion in Indonesia.

The investment will support the development of an integrated petrochemical complex equipped with Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) facilities on Java Island.

The CCS facility is expected to begin operations before 2030, with an initial carbon storage capacity of 2 million tons of CO₂ per year.

The project is projected to generate more than 10,000 jobs during construction and 600 high-skilled permanent jobs once operational.

Government Endorsement for Strategic Energy Projects

During the meeting, ExxonMobil CEO Wade Floyd outlined the progress of the planned investment and presented the next steps in the initiative.

He also expressed appreciation for the Indonesian government’s support of ExxonMobil’s ongoing and future energy projects.

Minister Airlangga was accompanied by Elen Setiadi, Deputy for Coordination of Energy and Mineral Resources at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs.
