Indonesia Boosts Industrial Workforce Development in Morowali to Drive Metal Industry Growth

Indonesia’s Ministry of Industry is intensifying efforts to shape a skilled and adaptive industrial workforce, aligning with the National Industrial Development Master Plan (RIPIN) that targets Indonesia to become a resilient industrial nation by 2035.

A key part of this strategy involves robust collaboration between central and regional governments to expand workforce training across emerging industrial zones.

“Synergy between the central and regional governments is key to expanding the reach of industrial human resources training programs to potential regions,” said Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita in a written statement from Jakarta on Tuesday (17/6).

Morowali, a regency gaining recognition as a metal industry hub, has become a focal point for government-backed industrial development.

The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) is committed to supporting its growth not only in large-scale enterprises but also across small and medium-sized industries (IKM) to ensure an inclusive and sustainable industrial ecosystem.

Metal Industry Leads Investment Surge in Q1 2025

According to the Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming, the base metal industry and its derivatives dominated investment realization in Q1 2025, with a total value reaching IDR 67.3 trillion.

“By developing its vast potential, Morowali can become a region with a highly advanced metal industry and a major contributor to the national economy,” Agus emphasized.

Competency-Based Training Builds Local Talent in Morowali

In response to industry demand, the Ministry of Industry through the Human Resources Development Agency (BPSDMI) is currently conducting a Competency-Based Metal Manufacturing Process Training in Morowali.

The program is funded by the Morowali Regency Trade and Industry Office (Disperindag Pemkab Morowali) and supported administratively by the Center for Standardization and Industrial Services for Chemistry, Pharmaceuticals, and Packaging (BBSPJIKFK).

This hands-on training targets the development of technical skills in operating CNC machines, bending, and shearing—key competencies tailored to Morowali’s industrial needs.

The training runs from June 13 to 23, 2025, and involves five local participants.

Inter-Agency Cooperation Expands Workforce Readiness

The Jakarta Industrial Training Center (BDI Jakarta), operating under BPSDMI, leads the training implementation.

As a technical unit specializing in sectors like metals, textiles, batik, welding, and automotive, BDI Jakarta applies a 3-in-1 system: training, competency certification, and job placement.

“Morowali holds great potential in the metal sector. We are committed to advancing the metal industry and improving the competencies of local human resources to compete not only nationally but internationally,” said BPSDMI Head Masrokhan.

Ali Khomaini, Head of BDI Jakarta, emphasized the need to expand such collaborative models to other regions.

“This kind of inter-governmental cooperation should be strengthened and broadened to involve other regional offices to enhance the industrial workforce across Indonesia,” he stated.

Pushing for Inclusive Downstream Industry Development

Zafitri Zainuddin, Head of Disperindag Pemkab Morowali, acknowledged the region’s current focus on upstream industries.

“Moving forward, we hope to see downstream industry development that involves IKM players, allowing local communities to play an active role in the industrial value chain in a sustainable manner,” she said.
