Indonesia's Ministry of Health and the United Kingdom government have launched the UK–Indonesia Health Partnership Platform, known as Tangguh+, to strengthen bilateral health cooperation and support Indonesia's healthcare transformation (13/10).
The platform brings together government institutions, hospitals, universities, research organizations, industry, and international partners to coordinate initiatives in line with Indonesia's health transformation priorities.
Tangguh+ Aims to Deliver Tangible Health Benefits
Deputy Minister of Health Prof. Dante Saksono Harbuwono said the partnership must deliver practical benefits for the public rather than remain limited to agreements and bilateral meetings. He said cooperation should strengthen the health system, improve healthcare workforce capacity, and build resilience against future health threats.
“The real value of a strategic partnership lies not only in engagement and the agreements we sign, but in our ability to bring together the right expertise, institutions, and resources to deliver sustainable results,” Dante said at the launch in Jakarta.
The partnership builds on a memorandum of understanding signed on May 20, 2025, between Indonesia's Ministry of Health and the UK's Department of Health and Social Care. The agreement covers seven areas: healthcare services, disease surveillance and control, health science and innovation, health workers, clinical research, digital health, and the shift from treatment toward prevention.
Health Workforce Development, Technology, and Security Are Key Priorities
Through Tangguh+, Indonesia and the UK will strengthen cooperation in three main areas: health workforce development, technology innovation, and health security. The partnership will also cover health systems and infrastructure, research and innovation, and public-private partnerships.
These areas of cooperation are expected to support more equitable access to quality healthcare for people across Indonesia's various regions.
Five Health Cooperation Initiatives Highlighted
The Tangguh+ launch featured five cooperation initiatives: the UK–Indonesia Digital Health Programme, the ASEAN–UK Health Security Partnership, a project to strengthen the International Health Regulations led by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), a strategic partnership between Cancer Research UK and Indonesia, and cooperation in healthcare and life sciences.
The initiatives reflect the areas covered by the bilateral partnership, including digital health, health security, international health regulations, cancer research, and healthcare and life sciences.
UK Reaffirms Commitment to Indonesia's Health Transformation
British Ambassador to Indonesia and Timor-Leste Dominic Jermey said the UK was committed to supporting Indonesia's health transformation through cooperation involving both governments, the UK's National Health Service (NHS), universities, research institutions, and the private sector.
Melinda Bohannon, Director General for Global Issues at the UK's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, said the partnership was based on shared interests, the exchange of expertise, and joint responsibility for addressing global health challenges.
Dante said he hoped Tangguh+ would bridge the gap between commitments and tangible results, ensuring that cooperation between the two countries delivered sustainable benefits for the public.
“Let us bridge the gap between what we aspire to achieve and what our people deserve,” he said.
