ICESS Supports CCS and CCUS Project Development
Vice President Business Development of Pertamina Drilling, Dedi Damhuri, said the company continues to strengthen its capabilities in supporting CCS and Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) projects through Integrated CCS/CCUS, Engineering, Supervisory & Services (ICESS).
According to Dedi, ICESS is designed as an integrated one-stop service that provides comprehensive solutions for CCS and CCUS project development across Pertamina Group entities.
“Through ICESS, Pertamina Drilling provides integrated solutions to support CCS/CCUS development within Pertamina Group,” Dedi said.
The Water Injectivity Test was also part of the Waterflood Optimization (WFO) program, which utilized treated water from the Balongan Wastewater Treatment Plant (IPAL).
The approach was conducted to optimize reservoir management while becoming an initial step to measure field readiness for future carbon dioxide injection in CCS projects.
WIT Data Becomes Reference for CO₂ Storage Evaluation
The data obtained from the Water Injectivity Test will become an important reference for evaluating reservoir characteristics, especially the ability of underground formations to receive injected fluids before being used for permanent CO₂ storage.
Principle Specialist Upstream Innovation and Low Carbon at PT Pertamina (Persero), Dewi Mersitarini, explained that the test targeted water injection of up to 600 barrels while maintaining operating pressure below fracture pressure to ensure reservoir safety.
She stated that collaboration between Pertamina entities plays an important role in preparing CCS and CCUS implementation while maintaining high occupational safety standards.
“The results of the Water Injectivity Test will become highly important analog data to strengthen reservoir evaluation and simulation of its ability to receive and store CO₂, both for permanent storage and to support oil and gas production enhancement,” Dewi explained.
Pertamina Strengthens Preparation for Low-Carbon Energy Industry
Dewi said that more complete data would increase confidence in the success of carbon injection and storage processes.
The data would also help reduce technical and investment risks in future commercial-scale CCS projects.
The successful completion of the first Water Injectivity Test at Jatibarang Field shows Pertamina’s efforts to develop the infrastructure and technological capabilities needed to support a low-carbon energy industry.
The step also strengthens Pertamina’s preparation for CCS implementation as part of its strategy toward Indonesia’s net-zero emissions target.
