Nezar Patria Calls for Collaboration to Strengthen AI Research in Indonesia
Indonesia is taking significant strides in artificial intelligence (AI) development as Deputy Minister of Communication and Informatics, Nezar Patria, emphasizes the need for collaboration among stakeholders. Speaking recently, Patria highlighted that a robust AI ecosystem is essential for advancing Indonesia's digital economy. However, challenges such as high research costs, a shortage of skilled digital talent, and ethical concerns about AI usage remain hurdles to be addressed.
Patria underlined the critical role of AI in shaping the future economy. AI technologies are expected to contribute significantly to ASEAN's digital economy, with projections of a $366 billion contribution by 2030. To ensure Indonesia capitalizes on this growth, the government is fostering collaborations among private companies, academia, and civil society. This multi-sectoral approach aims to strengthen AI research and accelerate its adoption for economic and societal benefits.
Key to this development is the preparation of a National AI Strategy. This initiative, nearing its final stages, will establish ethical guidelines and regulatory frameworks for AI implementation. By introducing a Ministerial Circular on AI ethics, the government seeks to promote inclusivity, accountability, and privacy in AI operations. These regulations aim to mitigate risks while maximizing AI's positive impacts on industries and communities.
Collaboration is central to the government's efforts. Patria urged the private sector and academic institutions to invest in upskilling human resources. Training programs and educational initiatives are expected to produce a workforce ready to meet the demands of AI-driven industries. Moreover, partnerships with global tech leaders like Microsoft and Qualcomm underline Indonesia’s commitment to developing an inclusive AI ecosystem.
Despite challenges, such as resource constraints and ethical concerns, Indonesia's efforts in AI development are a testament to its vision for a sustainable digital economy. The country is poised to leverage AI not only for economic growth but also for creating new opportunities and improving the quality of life for its citizens. By ensuring responsible AI use through collaborative efforts and strong governance, Indonesia can position itself as a leader in the ASEAN digital economy.
