Bank Mandiri Launches QRIS Tap for Seamless Public Transport Payments in Yogyakarta

Bank Mandiri has officially launched the QRIS Tap feature for public transportation payments in Yogyakarta, beginning with Damri bus services.

The feature will soon be available for the KRL Commuterline in September 2025.

This initiative builds on the success of QRIS Tap use in Jakarta’s MRT system and across various retail merchants, MSMEs, and restaurants nationwide.

How QRIS Tap Enhances Payment Convenience and Security

Yanto Masyap, SVP Digital Retail Banking at Bank Mandiri, stated that adopting QRIS Tap Livin’ for Yogyakarta’s transportation reflects the company’s commitment to expanding technology-based financial inclusion.

This move aligns with the joint efforts of Bank Indonesia and the government to accelerate the digitization of the national payment system.

With QRIS Tap, customers simply tap their NFC-enabled smartphones on the reader at Damri bus ticket counters for contactless payment.

Users can select funds from their connected savings or credit cards via the Livin’ by Mandiri app.

Yanto emphasized, “Through this feature, we want to provide extra convenience for the community, especially public transport users.

There is no need to carry cards or cash anymore, just an NFC-enabled phone to pay directly through Livin’ by Mandiri.”

For the KRL Commuterline in Yogyakarta, this feature will allow customers to tap-in when entering stations and tap-out upon exit, speeding up the payment process.

Expansion Plans for QRIS Tap Across Indonesia’s Transport Sector

The implementation of QRIS Tap is part of a broader push to use NFC technology for seamless, real-time, and secure payment systems.

Currently, the feature supports NFC-enabled Android devices, with development underway for other operating systems.

Bank Mandiri views transportation as a strategic sector due to its high transaction volume and public mobility, making it ideal for digital payment adoption.

Future plans include extending QRIS Tap to other transport modes such as TransJakarta, LRT, and intercity services.

Bank Mandiri’s Role in Driving Digital Financial Inclusion

With over 31.6 million active users of Livin’ by Mandiri and transaction values reaching IDR 1,744 trillion as of May 2025, Bank Mandiri possesses a strong digital infrastructure to drive widespread adoption of QRIS Tap.

The bank also operates hundreds of thousands of EDC machines nationwide integrated with the QRIS ecosystem.

QRIS Tap complements the regular QRIS payment method on Livin’, offering users more flexible payment options within a single app.

Technological Infrastructure Behind QRIS Tap’s Success

Bank Mandiri aims for this initiative to support equitable digital financial services across Indonesia while strengthening collaboration with regulators and industry players to create an inclusive, efficient, and empowering payment system for society.
