TikTok and WHO Join Forces to Boost Mental Health Awareness in Indonesia
In a groundbreaking initiative, TikTok has partnered with the World Health Organization (WHO) to promote mental health awareness in Indonesia. The program, aimed at creating accessible and credible mental health information, leverages the popularity of TikTok to engage with a wide audience, particularly young people.
Making Complex Topics Relatable
The collaboration includes contributions from local creators under the Fides network, who transform intricate scientific research into engaging short videos. These creators, including prominent names like Dr. Farhan Zubedi and Dr. Santi Yuliani, use relatable storytelling to normalize discussions about mental health. Their approach aligns with a 2022 YouGov survey showing that 77% of Indonesian respondents feel comfortable discussing mental health issues.
“By simplifying complex topics, we hope to encourage more people to seek help and support when needed,” said Dr. Zubedi, a TikTok creator with over 2.6 million followers. He frequently receives messages from followers experiencing mental distress and always emphasizes the importance of seeking professional help.
Collaborative and Inclusive Efforts
The initiative also brings together nonprofit organizations such as Into The Light Indonesia, which is dedicated to promoting accurate mental health information. According to Marshiella Pandji, Public Policy & Government Relations representative for TikTok Indonesia, the complexity of mental health issues necessitates a collaborative approach.
“By integrating efforts across digital platforms, nonprofits, and government bodies, we aim to foster a supportive environment where mental health discussions are normalized and based on credible information,” Pandji stated during a recent event in Jakarta.
Encouraging Youth to Speak Up
The program’s primary goal is to empower young Indonesians to comfortably discuss their mental health and seek help. WHO’s Deputy Representative for Indonesia, Momoe Takeuchi, emphasized the potential long-term benefits: “By encouraging youth to engage in mental health conversations, we indirectly contribute to a healthier future.”
The Role of Digital Media in Health Advocacy
TikTok’s vast reach and appeal make it an effective platform for health advocacy. Programs like this demonstrate how social media can be a force for good, transforming perceptions and breaking down stigmas surrounding mental health.
As mental health continues to gain recognition as a critical aspect of overall well-being, initiatives like this pave the way for a more informed and supportive society. By leveraging the power of digital platforms and fostering collaboration, Indonesia is making significant strides in mental health awareness.
