Express Taxi Partners with GoTo, Returns to Jabodetabek with Electric Cars

PT Express Transindo Utama Tbk (Express Group) has officially resumed operations in Jabodetabek after halting its conventional taxi services due to the pandemic. This comeback is fueled by a strategic partnership with GOTO's subsidiary, PT Rekan Anak Bangsa, which began in November 2024. Since December 2024, Express has been utilizing electric vehicles, specifically BYD M6 models, as part of its updated fleet.

The company has also integrated public electric vehicle charging stations (SPKLU) into its vehicle pools to support the operation of these eco-friendly taxis. This move aligns with global trends towards sustainability and reduced carbon emissions. Express Group’s return represents a significant shift in the local transportation market, with the company adapting to the evolving landscape shaped by app-based ride-hailing services.

Once a dominant force in the taxi industry across various major cities, Express faced considerable challenges with the rise of app-based transport services after 2015. As a result, the company redefined its strategy, now collaborating with online transportation platforms to offer more efficient and accessible services for the public.

Johannes Triatmojo, CEO of PT Express Transindo Utama, highlighted that the collaboration would combine Express's strong fleet management and driver expertise with the cutting-edge technology of app-based transport services, ensuring better service quality for users. "Our target is to have at least 24,000 taxis, both conventional and online, to meet the transportation needs in Jabodetabek," said Johannes.

Despite the company's lack of a controlling shareholder since 2019, Express has continued to receive substantial support from investors dedicated to its long-term viability. This backing will be crucial in the company’s next phase of growth and expansion.

Express's revival also brings new opportunities for drivers, particularly those without vehicles, to join the electric fleet through the GoCar app. This collaboration aims to elevate GoCar’s position as the top choice for transportation services in Indonesia. The synergy between Express and GoCar seeks to create a more innovative, environmentally friendly transportation solution that benefits both consumers and drivers.

Recent statistics from GoodStats (July 2023) show that 43.3% of Indonesians prefer GoCar over other ride-hailing platforms, underscoring the potential of this partnership to increase market share. Express Group is confident that its re-entry into the market, combined with an electric vehicle fleet and seamless integration with GoCar, will meet customer expectations in today’s digital-driven world.

By leveraging digital tools and fleet management expertise, Express and GoCar aim to set new industry standards while offering more flexible transportation options to the public. This collaboration not only promises to reshape the ride-hailing space but also to foster a more sustainable and user-friendly environment for urban mobility.
