Sinar Mas and KIRA Invest $300M in Jakarta's Data Center

SM+, a digital infrastructure company backed by Sinar Mas, along with its joint venture partner Korea Investment Real Asset Management (KIRA), has officially started the construction of SMX01, an AI-ready data center, in Jakarta's Central Business District on Thursday (6/3/2025).

The advanced facility, with an investment of over $300 million, is being developed in collaboration with LG Sinar Mas, acting as the technology advisor and operator. LG Sinar Mas brings its expertise in running and developing over 600 MW of data center capacity in Korea.

Scheduled to begin operations in the second half of 2026, SMX01 aims to meet the rising demand for digital infrastructure in Southeast Asia, where the region's digital economy is projected to reach $1 trillion by 2030.

With a white space data hall covering nearly 15,500 square meters, SMX01 is designed to serve a range of clients, from enterprises to global hyperscale companies. The facility offers high scalability, supporting up to 2,400 racks across nine data halls. Each hall can hold up to 340 racks and is adaptable to various data center requirements, including colocation services, high-density hyperscale racks, and emerging applications like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning.

SMX01 aims to position Indonesia as a key player in Southeast Asia's tech transformation, featuring advanced infrastructure to support high-performance computing. Starting with an initial capacity of 18 MW, expandable to 60 MW, the data center is equipped with:

  • High-density racks supporting up to 130 KW per rack
  • Advanced air cooling technology and liquid cooling systems as needed
  • Multiple fiber routes offering connections to Indonesia's leading internet service providers

The data center also promotes sustainability through energy-efficient design and low Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), while ensuring high-level security with multiple layers of protection aligned with global standards. SMX01 will be built to Tier IV standards and aims to achieve green building certification.

“This new data center reflects our commitment to providing secure and scalable digital infrastructure, connecting Indonesia's growing market with the global digital ecosystem,” said Herson Suindah, President Director and CEO of SM+.

He added that with SMX01 and a network of 24 interconnected edge data centers across Indonesia, SM+ supports the adoption of advanced technology, reduces network latency for end-users, accelerates global company entry, and enables AI workloads. “As Indonesia's digital economy grows, we are proud to build the foundation needed for this expansion alongside our partners,” he said.

Yong Sik Kim, CEO of KIRA, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration: “We are thrilled to partner with SM+ and LG Sinar Mas on this flagship data center project. Our investment in SMX01 reaffirms our confidence in Indonesia's digital economic growth.”

Dong Hyup Han, CEO of LG Sinar Mas, emphasized the significance of the partnership: “Our collaboration with SM+ and KIRA on SMX01 marks a major step in advancing Indonesia's digital infrastructure. By combining our technology expertise with SM+'s local market knowledge, we are setting a new standard for data centers in the region.”
